VIPS offers a variety of programs and services that are uniquely tailored to the needs of young children who are blind or visually impaired and their families. These services are designed to lessen the developmental impacts of visual impairment by teaching children to:

  • Use other senses to gather information and;
  • Use remaining vision to their best advantage.

LITTLE LEARNERS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

VIPS CENTRAL KENTUCKY

Little Learners Enrichment Program is for children who are 2 and 3 years of age.

It takes place Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  This is a drop-off early preschool class to address children’s independent skill development with a VIPS teacher and assistant. Please bring a lunch. The cost is $35/week.

The Little Learners Enrichment Program is held at the new VIPS Central Kentucky office located within The Lexington Hearing and Speech Center, 350 Henry Clay Blvd, Lexington, KY 40502.

BIRTH TO AGE 3

Direct services between a VIPS teacher and your child are available through either the First Steps Program or by scholarship.  These services include:
  • Assessments
    • A VIPS teacher conducts developmental assessments, functional vision assessments and Orientation & Mobility (O&M) assessments as needed.
  • Early Intervention Services
    • VIPS teachers provide direct services to children in their homes whenever possible. If children are not at home during the day, they can still receive services in their childcare setting.  Consultations are offered to parents and caregivers during these sessions.

VIPS LOUISVILLE & VIPS CENTRAL KENTUCKY

2-Day-2’s
  • A program specifically designed for 2-year olds, children work on preschool readiness to help them in the transition to a daily preschool routine.  Each day consists of some or all of the following:
    • Social skills building
    • Classroom routines
    • Circle time
    • Story time
    • Center time
    • Music Therapy (VIPS-Louisville)
    • Outdoor play
    • Sharing
    • Turn taking
  • 2-Day-2’s meets on the following days and times:
    • Louisville: Monday & Tuesday or Wednesday & Thursday 9am-Noon
    • Central KY: Dates TBA
  • 2-Day-2’s does allow for a limited number of Community Peers.
  • Tuition for 2-Day-2’s is $210/month for both VIPS students and Community Peers. Financial assistance may be available to VIPS students who need it.
 

ALL VIPS OFFICES

Play & Learn (PAL)
  • PAL class is offered to children, birth to age 5, and their parents/caregivers and siblings. PAL provides children with a therapeutic play setting where they have the opportunity to interact with others and to explore a more structured environment.
  • PAL provides parents with the opportunity to gain insight and information from other children and parents in the VIPS program and the chance to make friends themselves.
  • PAL groups are held at all three locations throughout the year.  Stay tuned for information about the next one!

AGE 3-5

VIPS offices in Kentucky provide services to children who are preschool age both privately and through contracts with local public school systems.  Services for this age group include:
  • Assessments
    • VIPS teachers conduct learning media assessments, functional vision assessments and Orientation & Mobility (O&M) assessments.
  • Direct Intervention & Preschool Consultation
    • VIPS provides direct intervention in the preschool classes where VIPS children are enrolled, as well as consultation to preschool staff.
  • Parent-Child Advocacy
    • Upon parent request, a VIPS staff member will assist in the educational planning for a child by attending ARC meetings to write the child’s IEP or 504 plan for special services.

VIPS LOUISVILLE

Children who live in the Louisville Metro area (including Southern Indiana or surrounding Kentucky counties) can qualify for the following center-based programs in Louisville:

Kids Town Preschool at VIPS
  • The teachers at Kids Town Preschool at VIPS center their curriculum on the Kentucky Early Childhood Standards developed by the Kentucky Department of Education. The standards address all areas of development and include appropriate goals to ensure the child’s readiness for kindergarten at age five.

The path taken by the students at Kids Town Preschool at VIPS is supported by the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).   The ECC is an expanded list of skills, which need to be addressed when educating a student who is blind or visually impaired.  These additional skills will lead our students to greater levels of independence, self-advocacy, personal care, and recreation and leisure activities, to name but a few areas addressed.

Kids Town Preschool at VIPS is held Monday-Thursday from 9am-1pm.  Childcare is available from 8am-9am and again from 1pm-5:30pm for an additional $5/hour.

Kids Town Preschool at VIPS does allow for a limited number of Community Peers each school year.  Tuition is $469/month from September-May.  Transportation is not provided for Community Peers.

  • Summer Enrichment does allow for a limited number of Community Peers. Tuition for Summer Enrichment Program will be announced March 2016.
  • Childcare is available from 8am-9am and again from 3pm-5:30pm for an additional $5/hour for VIPS students and Community Peers.
  • Transportation is not available for Summer Enrichment.

VIPS CENTRAL KENTUCKY

VIPS Summer Enrichment Program
  • Age 2: Designed to help little ones transition to preschool, and to help in the development of socialization skills with their peers.
  • Ages 3-5: Offers continuation of preschool during the summer months to help maintain skills, in a fun sensory-filled environment.
  • Classes held during the summer months on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Please bring a lunch. The cost is $35/week.
VIPS Summer Sensations Camp
  • VIPS Summer Sensations Camp provides a variety of fun and exciting sensory activities, crafts, gross motor activities and special guests!
  • Camp is open to all current and former VIPS children and their siblings up to age 10.
  • The camp is offered one day a week for six weeks during the months of June and July.  Each camp day is 3 hours in length.
  • Free for all!

VIPS INDIANA

VIPS Indiana does not currently offer center-based programs for children over age 3, but one day we will!

PARENTS, FAMILIES & CAREGIVERS

  VIPS believes that parents are their children’s first and best teachers and is committed to providing families with the education and support they need to be successful in helping their children reach their full potential.  VIPS services are tailored to the whole family, including siblings, grandparents and other caregivers.  These services include:                                      Community Outings
  • VIPS hosts family outings in the communities in which its offices are located.
Holiday Parties
  • VIPS hosts families for holiday parties, including Halloween, Christmas and Easter.
Parent Dinner Meetings
  • VIPS regularly holds dinners, with a featured speaker/topic, where families can come together for information and support.
Parent Newsletter
  • The VIPS Parent Newsletter, “VISability,” is published quarterly and contains information on resources, teaching strategies, inspirational stories and “happenings” at all three VIPS offices.
Parents Night Out (VIPS Central Kentucky Only)
  • VIPS staff and volunteers watch your children, and their siblings, while parents enjoy a few hours alone for a dinner or a movie.
VIPS Lending Library
  • VIPS Louisville has a library of children’s books in, both, large print and braille, along with story boxes, talking books, equipment and videos. Parents may also borrow professional journals, pamphlets and articles about their child’s diagnosis.
 VIPS Family Retreat
  • This annual event brings together all VIPS families for a day of learning and fun. There are special activities for children of all ages (including siblings), and parents are treated to an exceptional educational conference.  The VIPS Family Retreat features experts in the field of visual impairment and special needs, inspirational speakers and hands-on activities.
 “Can Do!” Video Series
  • This series of DVDs provides concrete information to help parents deal with the impacts of visual impairment on particular areas of development.  They can be checked out of your local office or are available for purchase as well.
